"I’m used to recordings of the highest quality from Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort, but I wasn’t prepared for just how moving I would find this one. It may have been recorded in 2009, but this is one of the most profound discs I’ve heard in all of 2015.

Recording of the Month
"This is a disc of staggering beauty and effortless sophistication. Every element of it oozes care in conception and execution right down to the austere simplicity of the pure white booklet design and tastefully discreet aquamarine print. I am wary of compilation albums and also of baroque specialists who suddenly turn their hand to other eras of music. On both fronts Paul McCreesh and his superb Gabrieli Consort prove me woefully wrong in this instance The Gabrieli’s enormous skill is their super-sensitive response to the texts and an extraordinarily fine control of dynamic, balance and lineA disc of the year without doubt."

’Disc of the Month’
The centrepiece of the recital is the luminously beautiful Requiem of Herbert Howells. The remainder of the programme has been chosen with discerning perception and it will be noted that that there are some intelligent – and contrasting – pairings Some years ago John Rutter demonstrated in several recordings with his Cambridge Singers that the acoustic of Ely Cathedral’s Lady Chapel is ideal for repertoire and forces such as this. On this occasion producer Adrian Peacock and balance engineer Neil Hutchinson have achieved a superb recording which captures the warm, intimate ambience of the venue and which achieves a fine clarity at the same time. The documentation is excellent and is beautifully produced. This is a disc of great distinction."
