Sound-wise, the score’s vast dnamic curve is truthfully reproduced I would unhesitatingly recommend this recording for the sake of Michelle DeYoung, Salonen and the Philharmonia
Rob Cowan - Gramophone magazine - July 2014
Salonen conducts a taut, luxuriant reading that captures the scores majesty and mystery Michelle DeYoung’swondrfully alive Judith. The inclusion of the enigmatic introduction spoken in English by Juliet Stevenson, is an unxpected bonus." ***

IRR Outstanding
stunning playing from every member of the Philharmonia Orchestra, clearly on top form that evening in Vienna, and just as clearly inspired by the perfect dramatic pacing of Esa-Pekka Salonen. There is barely a trace of audience noise, and no applause. It was no doubt held spellbound, as I was, by this outstanding performance of a remarkable masterpiece.

Esa-Pekka Salonen, weilding the baton in this live performance drives the score with a terse sense of focus, radiating out from its firm skeleton. Thus orchestral matters stay on a fairly tight rein in emotional terms: that territory belongs to the singers. Micelle DeYoung is a sensuous and impassioned Judith; the instantly recognisable Sir John Tomlinson as her Bluebeard has such force of personality, though, that he can’t help but sominate the proceedings this is a haunting and very moving account.
