Notes
In 1839 the Viennese waltz conquered Copenhagen and this included a young horseguard from Odense, Hans Christian Lumbye, on a visit to Copenhagen. To shorten an amazing not to say amusing story, Lumbye memorised on his violin the music he had heard, returned to Odense where he formed and led his own band of musicians, eventually started composing his own music in a similar vein which was received with great enthusiasm. This led to him being invited to become the first music director of the newly opened Tivoli Gardens Orchestra in Copenhagen, a post he retained until his death in 1874.
It has been said that if Strauss was the king of the waltz, then Lumbye was the king of the Galop (though he wrote many waltzes as well). Although this is a live performance much comment has been made of the silence of the Danish audience. A further recording of Lumbye’s music will follow.
